Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks
  • 1.5 lb ground beef (80/20 is best)
  • 1 unit egg
  • cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (or Italian seasoning)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter (for cooking)
Onion Gravy
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt + pepper (to taste)

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, diced onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, dried thyme, salt, and pepper.
  2. Shape mixture into 4–6 oval patties.
Cooking Patties
  1. Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
  3. Remove patties to a plate.
Making Gravy
  1. In the same skillet, melt butter and cook sliced onions for 10–12 minutes until soft and golden.
  2. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Simmer the gravy until thick.
  5. Add the patties back into the skillet and simmer for 2–3 minutes.

Notes

Don't overmix the meat to avoid tough patties. Create a small dent in the middle of each patty to ensure it cooks evenly. Allow the onions to cook sufficiently for maximum flavor in the gravy.
